Amalia Tormala
ACADEMIC & TEST PREP INSTRUCTOR
Amalia Tormala is a rising freshman at Dartmouth College where she plans to major in Quantitative Social Sciences and Philosophy or Economics to further her love for understanding, analyzing, and reporting on current political, global, and financial events. She is interested in pursuing data journalism, a field incorporating statistics seamlessly into reporting.
Amalia has served as the editor-in-chief of three publications: two affiliated with her high school and one online nonprofit newsmagazine. In addition, she is an editorial intern for the Los Altos Town Crier, a decades-old newspaper with 16,000 weekly readers. Amalia’s journalistic and independent written work have been recognized by the Journalism Education Association/National Scholastic Press Association and the John Locke Institute, respectively.
Her online newsmagazine, the Midpeninsula Post, features a section dedicated to reporting on the Bay Area’s underserved communities. In addition, Amalia’s passion for increasing visibility and accessibility for underrepresented groups led her to co-create a guidebook for low-income and first-generation students. Two hundred copies of this publication have been distributed at her high school.
In addition to volunteering with myriad nonprofits (ask her about scooping donkey poop), Amalia works as peer tutor across all academic subjects plus SAT/PSAT. Students adore Amalia and report significant increases in their executive functioning, comprehension of material, and scores. Outside of tutoring, Amalia hikes, plays guitar, and reads investigative journalism.
